Today\u2019s post (our first!) is part one in a two-part series\nabout maximizing high-efficiency gas boilers\u2014which, as you\u2019ve likely\nexperienced\u2014are a particularly hot <\/em>product\nnow both in residential<\/a>\nand commercial<\/a>\napplications. These incredibly efficient pieces of equipment are excellent as\nnew installs, but also have generated a lot of interest in the retrofit market as\nconsumers search for more efficiency and utility rebates<\/a> to help\nlower the cost of the upgrade.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let\u2019s take a closer look at how you can achieve successful\ninstallation of new high-efficiency gas boilers, specifically in residential\nand light commercial settings, by concentrating on a few best practices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Which Gas Boilers are High-Efficiency?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

You know that the term \u201chigh-efficiency\u201d is applied to equipment that uses less fuel and less water than standard models to achieve the same or better heating outcomes. High-efficiency gas-fired boilers are at least 90% efficient based on annual fuel utilization efficiency (AFUE) ratings<\/a>, and residential models typically carry the all-important ENERGY STAR<\/a> designation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

When properly installed and operated, high-efficiency\nequipment should save its owner money, which is why these boilers are\nattractive to home and business owners.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Proper Installation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

It may go without saying, but assuring that equipment is\ncarefully and correctly installed according to IO&M\nmanual<\/a> specifications is imperative for preserving product warranties, as\nwell as creating happy customers. The biggest points to consider at install of new gas-fired\nhigh-efficiency boilers include the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Boiler Sizing<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Accurate sizing requires a thorough heat loss calculation<\/a>, which is something that many installers feel is too time consuming. Additionally, there is a misconception in the industry that because high-efficiency boilers are typically the condensing type and modulate to claim latent heat, they don\u2019t need to be as carefully sized as non-condensing boilers. However, proper sizing is what allows for accurate modulation, which prevents water from heating too quickly and causing short-cycling problems in operation! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are lots of useful heat loss calculators available\ntoday, so you don\u2019t have to do manual math. Whether you\u2019re installing\nnon-condensing or condensing boilers, sizing is equally essential.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Proper Venting<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Gas boilers offer the major benefit of not having to be\nvented through a traditional chimney structure. This fact is one of the many\nthat\u2019s made them so popular. This doesn\u2019t mean that installers shouldn\u2019t pay\nclose attention to venting factors, however. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In fact, it can be argued that venting considerations\u2014which\ncan affect the physical placement of the boiler itself\u2014are more important than\never, as newer modulating boilers with high turndown\ntend to move less air through the heat exchanger (meaning that products\nof combustion aren\u2019t necessarily pushed as hard beyond the end of the vent).\nAlways follow the IO&M manual\u2019s venting specifications for best results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Piping the Boiler<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Some installers might argue that boilers with fire tube heat\nexchangers don\u2019t require primary and secondary (p\/s) piping. And they may have\npreconceived notions about system piping size relative to boiler piping size.\nIt\u2019s important to reiterate that following the IO&M manual to pipe the\nboiler\u2014instead of relying on prior experience to guide decision-making\u2014is the\nbest thing you can do. The best\nboiler manufacturers in the industry<\/a> take great care in constructing our\nmanuals to ensure the best installation outcomes and remove any guesswork\u2014you\ncan use our documentation with confidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Setting Zone Controls<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

\u201cZoning\u201d a home or light commercial facility for the most\nefficient boiler operation is both an art and a science. The goal with setting\nup different heating zones is to assure that the boiler will rarely have to\noperate with the fan blasting at its maximum RPM. This process is easy to\naccomplish with the state-of-the-art controls built into modern boilers. Again,\nthe IO&M manual will be extremely helpful in zoning, though you may also\nwant to connect with\ntechnical service<\/a> at your boiler\u2019s manufacturer with specific questions\nabout heating zones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Optimal Start-up<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Once all boiler components are installed, it\u2019s important to\nstart strong, whether you\u2019re working with natural gas or LP, you\u2019ll need to\nassure that incoming gas pressure is appropriate. Even with other gas\nappliances running, this pressure needs to be higher than the minimum\nspecification for the boiler.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Test combustion and be sure that oxygen (O2) is adequate for\nboth low fire and high fire operation\u2014we probably sound like a broken record by\nnow, but your IO&M manual will give you the proper O2 settings. Don\u2019t\nforget, though, that low fire O2 must be greater than or equal to the high fire\nO2.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
